Hi there,

It's usually a nickname for the colour of their hair.

The only surname I can think of that would be suitable is "Saunders" or "Saunderson" (pronounced "Sanders(on)" in the northern parts of the UK)

Hi,

I am in NSW Australia.   I have several living rellies who are known as "Sandy" as it is a name that gets handed down through one of my lines.

So, from my tree:

When "Sandy" is male, it is because their formal (Given/Christian) name is Alexander (or in one case, Alex).
When "Sandy" is female, it is because their formal (Given/Christian) name is "Alexandra, or Sandra, or Gwenda"

None of my "Sandy" rellies have been called Sandy because of their hair colour, but I did go to school with a girl who we called Sandy because she was blonde.

Cheers,  JM

Every male Sandy I've known has been an Alexander.

Anecdote about my Dad... Alexander Forrest.  After being seriously wounded during WW11 he spent 6 months in an Italian hospital and on returning home to Scotland spent more time in Erskine Hospital.   As part of a charity drive for Erskine his story was used.  The pseudonym the newspaper gave him, instead of Alexander Forrest was Sandy Wood.   :)  I still have the original article and covering letter from the newspaper that ran the ad.

Thank you all for your replies, I did think it maybe Alexander, Was hopeful of something else more distinctive to narrow down the amount of births that come up for Alexander!

Sorry Kaz, I should have given your question more thought, especially regarding the section where this thread is (Scotland)..

I live further south where my playmates and pals were/are Sidneys, Arthurs, Herbert, George, etc.

I'm definitely living on another planet these days, as I'm actually trying to find an Alexander in Ross & Cromarty lol

Cheers,
Rena
