GUTHRIE Families from Scotland to Pennsylvania
« on: Friday 29 May 15 20:57 BST (UK) »
Hello! I am trying to help my wife discover more about her roots back to Scotland.

Her roots go to a John Guthrie, born in PA, son of Robert Guthrie, born at sea en route from Scotland. His father was also a Robert, whose father was also a Robert, born in 1735 in Garvock, Kincardine, Scotland. His father was a David Guthrie, b. 1685 and married to a Margaret Scott.

Almost all records I've found online named this David's father as a David Guthrie, b. 1653, married to a Margaret Arbuthnot.

However - today I came across online memoirs of a Gideon Guthrie, whose brother is supposed to be this same David of 1653, wife Margaret Arbuthnot, but who didn't leave any male descendants according to Gideon's writings.

If true - this leaves the 1685 David Guthrie, who was married to Margaret Scott, without a "father" at this point.

We are coming to Scotland next month (June) and so to be able to have this discrepancy cleared up would be great!

Classic Scottish novel "Sunset Song", by Lewis Grassic Gibbon is the tale of a Guthrie family from Kincardenshire.
