There is a discrepancy in Edmunds birthplace in this 1901 entry compared to the 1911 entry which says Durham Darlington

Living in Oldbury Worcs - looks like 3 Sitford/Titford Rd

William Mellor 38 sanitory plumber b Cannock
Annie  30 b Torquay
Jessica  13 b Burton on Trent
Edmund  12 b Darlaston
all following children b Oldbury
Emma  10
Edith  5
Gladys  3
William 9mths
RG13 Piece 2715 Folio 118 Page 1

I suppose it could be a typo or he just thought darlaston and darlington are the same place. darlaston makes more sense in my family though.

Maybe you would be better to get a copy of one of the daughter's marriage to see if the father was still alive ?

I assume you have this Edith Ivy Mellor married William Pugh June 1937 Birmingham

Looks like her death Edith Ivy Pugh date of birth 7/1/1914 died Sep 1990 age 76 Sandwell West Midlands

Gertrude Irene Perks died 2003 Dudley

Mary Lilian Melia died 2004 Sandwell West Midlands

It appears that the girls were bought up by an aunt according to my dad who said that his sister heard this rumour in the past which makes sense now we know that the mother died. As to what happened to the father is anyone's guess.
