1911 census - signature
« on: Saturday 30 May 15 20:48 BST (UK) »
Hi, another quick question

On the 1881 Census image (on Ancestry) would the signature at the bottom be that of the person filling in the census - in this case it gives my great granddad's names as the signature. Would it actually be his signature?

I have just checked an 1881 census sheet and there is no place for any signature at the bottom of it - just totals

Censuses prior to 1911 were completed by the enumerator.  The 1911 was completed by the resident and checked by the enumerator

Do you mean the 1911 census, as your title  says? The handwriting and signature on the 1911 census form is that of the actual person who filled it in.

The 1911 census is the first census where the original household schedules still exist, all original schedules for previous censuses were destroyed. The documents you see for these censuses  are the enumerators books, into which he/she copied the details from the original schedules.
