military history 1850's
« on: Sunday 31 May 15 20:50 BST (UK) »
First post on rootschat. Searching my Irish past. Great-granddad on 1901 census is a 94th Foot pensioner. He was born about 1826 so was probably serving 1840-ish to about 1860. That should put him in WO97/1662 but findmypast don't have him. He married in Dec 1860 to a girl in Skull and his sprogs were born on Clear Island. Where do I look now? He was Richard Jackson and family stories had him in the Crimea. Some of the 94th did volunteer for that.

Welcome to Rootschat.I hope the forum proves useful to you.

If I have the right record,it is possible that the census image says "84th",and there is a possible FindMyPast record to match.

Regards
Roger

Gee! Thank you Gortonboy. That's wonderful. The 1901 census has him as born in Wexford so it fits. Don't know how he got himself down to Cape Clear though. That's in the Gaelic area.

When the 84th Foot returned from India in 1859,they spent the next 6 years between England and Ireland.
Richard Jackson's discharge was 31 Dec 1862,so perhaps he was garrisoned at Cork during the latter period(he was attested there in 1851).

FTR
1901 census has Richard as born in Co. Wicklow which is a better match! - LINK
and 94th looks like a transcription error to me, and should read 84th as suggested

Marriage shows Richard's father as a Joseph JACKSON - LINK

Thanks, My Luck. Yes , he was in the 84th. and spent 20 years in Burma and India. I doubt if he ever went  back to Wexford. The Jackson family disappeared from Baltinglass so I've no idea where they went. Maybe over the pond like so many others.

Where is the Wexford connection?
Baltinglass is in Wicklow and he states Wicklow as his birthplace? 😊
