Oldham Marriage 6 feb 1837 - Edward Lees & Ann Pickering
« on: Monday 01 June 15 08:45 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me find any details such as Edward's father's occupation from this marriage above?

I understand his father's name was Daniel, but there are three options, a weaver, a hatter and a mill owner that I need to decide between.

Many thanks,  rchadz

Hi

I can only see the Parish Register entry for this Marriage. So therefore no father or occupation will be listed.  Most likely it was too early for Registration and a Certificate to be issued??

Marriage Register
St Mary Prestwich
Lancashire

Edward LEES and Ann PICKERING of Oldham were married in this Church 5th Feb 1837. Witnesses were Daniel GARSIDE? and James SHELDRICK

Might not mean much, but as the Marriage states he was from Oldham, this could be him??

Have you followed Edward and Ann through censuses for clues? Or do you have children's names?
Presumably, you have seen Edward and Hannah in 1841 living with Daniel, 60 yrs. These  are the hatters.

Civil registration started 1st July 1837, so there are no GRO marriage certificates before this.

Thanks everyone.

I knew that we just missed out on civil registration but I couldn't see the parish register so thanks for that KarenLee.  Daniel and Mary were my preferred parents but I need something more solid if I could.  I forgot that the father's occupation wasn't included in the parish register.

I did trace the Daniel's to the 1841 census and that is why I discounted the hatters.  Edward was a "roller turner" and had married and moved to Salford in 1841.

I could probably eliminate Daniel & Alice Lees if I saw his will.  As mentioned, he was a wealthy mill owner.  I cannot make the connection but I know Edward had 3 or maybe 4 children out of wedlock to Betty Chadderton before marrying Ann (someone completely different).
