George OFFORD
« on: Tuesday 02 June 15 21:48 BST (UK) »
I have had to review my ancestry search after running up a dead alley.

The information which I believe is correct is:
George Offord born Suffolk. In the 1841 census he gives his age as 45. In the 1851 he gives 64. Both census returns he is living in Walsham le Willows.
He firstly married (under age ??) a Mary Seaman in 1803 at Barningham. She died about 1814.
He then married Sarah Bussels (Widow DOB abt 1784). From this marriage they had Charlotte Offord born 1841 at Bury St Edmunds.
Charlotte went on to Mary James Smith at BSE on 17 June 1844.
Incidentally it looks as if George married a third time to Mary Hayward (widow) as in the 1851 census he has a Hayward as Son in Law, and Charlotte isn't with this family but is living with her brother John.

All  my previous tracking has been discarded as I took "the wrong turning with an extensive tree on Ancestry". I would really like to establish any information relating to George: his place/date of birth and any information relating to his parents and grandparents etc.
Finally any way to obtain Sarah Bussels maiden name?

Thanks
I'm researching: O'Connor, Connor, Rea, Smith, Skilton

Your dates are incorrect - Sarah would have been 57 when Charlotte was born. Marriage to Sarah was 1817 and Charlotte was b Wyverstone 1821

In 1841 - ages from 16 upwards were rounded down to the nearest 5yrs so George could have been between 45-49

In 1841 there is Robert Hayward aged 14 living with George plus Martha Offord aged 7 so he must have re-married approx 1830-1833

The 1844 marriage is incorrectly transcribed as Orfford  https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2DZF-XPX

Does the marriage cert confirm her father was George - occupation maltster

Hi Carole,

Yes certainly got dates wrong. Clumsy fingers after a long tiring day.

The information that Charlottes father George was a Maltster was provided by the Suffolk Family History Society

There is another Charlotte Offord with the same birthyear on the 1841 - different parents.

Have you actually seen the 1844 marriage cert confirming her fathers name was George?

Hi Carole,

Not seen marriage cert. Suffolk FHS did some research for me specifically on the Smiths. They identifed James marrying Charlotte and provided following info.
"Married by Banns at St James, BSE 17/6/1844.
Charlotte declared her father as George, occupation Maltster". Father doesn't appear to have been present as the" witnesses were James Smith and Mary Ann Lingein(not really legible)"

As all other information on Smith data tied up right through to my G/Father, I have taken the Charlotte link as correct.

However alternative data is useful to check up on, so can you please provde details of the other Charlotte.

Thanks

Bernard

1841 for Suffolk - 1841 does not show relationships and ages were rounded down to the nearest 5yrs.  All shown as born in Suffolk

John Offord 35 maltster
Martha    35
Charlotte  20
Fanny  14
James 13
Elizabeth 12
Hannah  10
Martha  8
Jane 6
Sarah  4
John  1
HO107 Piece 1035/14  Folio 7 Page 7

From FS - marriage post dates Charlotte's age

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NJK3-1J2

As the 1844 marriage cert confirms her father was George - there is no problem

CaroleW - re. 1841 census -  think you'll find that John was Charlotte's brother, rather than her father (see opening post when OP had dates in a muddle - she was with her brother in 1841 (not 1851).
