Pictures of Selkirk in the early 1800s?
« on: Sunday 07 June 15 17:32 BST (UK) »
Hi all, i was just wondering if anyone had or knew any good sites that had pics of Selkirk from around 1820-1860?

The only ones i have seen on google searches have mostly just included the market Square.

The street i am particularly interested in is Water row between the green and market place.

The business/house i am interested in would be the Bakery that Robert Emond ran there.

There is an old building located there now though i am not sure of it's age.

There were 2 Emonds in that street for sure between 1823-1841, the second Emond house is also an older house today.

Any Pointers would be a great help

Thanks

There is pictorial books of Selkirkshire & Old Selkirk which have good Photos

I know the tourist offices, libraries, local history groups & some local book shops in the area hold them

I was looking at Old Selkirk in Mayfield Garden Centre, Kelso at the weekend.

not sure where you are located, but might be worth contacting your library service to see if their can help.

The books should ISBN numbers so the your library may be able to help
The ISBN no. for selkirkshire in old photographs compiled by Ian w mitchell is ISBN 0-86299-687-2

Not sure of the ISBN number of Old Selkirk - think think it was compiled by Olsen.

Also for old books try the archive.org website it can be interesting - it a free site for access to various international libraries etc - just type in Selkirk and see want comes up

Also the dates you are looking at are very early for photograph as it be in is infancy - paintings/drawings/sketches were more the normal in the early 1800's, but do exist

iv426 do you have a number for water row? was it going down from the square towards  The Green on the Left or the Right. I have taken photos of all the shops and houses on both sides for a possible project but a number would help. I am a souter myself and you missed a wonderful Common Riding this past weekend with the sun all day Thursday Friday and Saturday..
let me know.
I found a census list of occupiers for 1817  which has George Emond  Kirk Wynd with 12 residents in the house.A Robert Emond Kirk Wynd with 9 residents and another Robert Emond KirkWynd with 4 residents. There is a Wuilliam Emond in Inner Row with 7 residents.
It doesnt give actual house numbers or occupations. I have had the info for years and came from a web site which may or maynot still exist/
www.cangenealogy.com/armstrong/selkirk1817.htm
I will sort out the photos and await your reply.

hi Alan, thanks for the reply.

The section that i am looking at is the left hand side of water row as you go from the market square down to the Green.

I will attach a pic of Selkirk in 1823, it lists 2 Emonds in that street, i then used the same 1817  census you linked to to see who lived where.

In that census it shows

Robert Emond   (4 people) Outer Line (continued) Kirk Wynd at the "Green end" of the street and
another Robert Emond (9 people) i am not sure which Robert is which, father and son were both Robert and both bakers.

I assumed when looking on google that the Emond House in the middle of water row being the biggest was the bakery? (Could be wrong?)

I think the other Emond listed around the corner (George) is a brother.

There are also Anderson's in Selkirk marked at that time but can't link them to my family yet.

Also here's a link i posted in the photo section to try to see if anyone could guess the age of the buildings.

In the attached picture the market is on the right hand side and the green the left.

Thanks for the offer :)
