John Alfred Leslie Blears
« on: Sunday 07 June 15 20:13 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to trace my second cousin Jane's birth father, John Alfred Leslie Blears.  He is listed on her birth certificate in 1944, and died in the late 1950s.  Jane was born in Coventry, and her mother was Dorothy Upton, born in Bramley, Leeds in 1921.

We know very little about John, and sadly Jane's mum died in 1950, so we can't ask her either!

Any help is gratefully received.

Thank you :)

Do you know where he died as I cannot find a death that matches?

Hi JJ,

He could have died in the Coventry area, I get the impression that it's quite complicated.  I can't find a marriage record for him either, and yet Jane's mum is listed as Dorothy Blears when she married for the second time.  I begin to wonder if she just took his name and they never married!

Thanks

John A L Blears is on the electoral register at 23 Leyton Rd, Handsworth, Birmingham. No Dorothy with him. From the mix (a couple then four individuals with no obvious name link) I would hazard a guess he is lodging there

wondering if this is the complication

Marriages
Q4 1931   Westbury  on Severn VOl 6a, p623
Blears    Leslie J A    (Harding)
Harding    Phyllis    (Blears)

there is a Blears child, mmn Harding b Coventry in 1933  1939

This child on 1911 seems to fit the birth found and the marriage location

That's so interesting, the family story is that he married Dorothy Upton in 1940 in Leeds!  Their daughter Jane was born in 1944 in Coventry.  I wonder if there was a previous marriage, and potential previous half sibling to Jane.  He then may not have been "free" to marry Dorothy.
