Hi  James Rothnie remained at Cauldhame until his death in his 90's in late 50's or early 60's - he and his wife - originally a Henry - had handed over the running of the farm to her son George Clark and his wife Maggie - Mr and Mrs Rothnie had 3 children Mary Alley- Jim Rothnie- and Isobel Collier. All passed away now with Mary the last to go in Dec 2019 at 99 years she is buried with her husband Gordon near her Mum and Dad in Tarves Cemetery.     As a toddler I remember the horses coming in from working in the fields and being unyoked watered and fed - that was about 1950. The Clarkes lived in the working end of the farmhouse at the steading end -  Mr and Mrs Rothnie lived at  the "posh" end - I stayed with them on many occasions till I was of school age - I remember Mrs Rothnie driving us to Craigdam Church in the Standard 10 every Sunday

Thanks Mick! This is very interesting. I will pass it on to my daughter and family.
The Cauldhame file is with them. I will however do some more investigating with your information.
Luckily I have just purchased some Scotland's People credits. Thanks again,

I have had a look at some BMDs relevant to your information.
Chatting to my daughter[on the phone] it occurred to me to ask if there are any photos of the house or the family?
My dau. and family have been in the house for 5 years. The previous owner for 12 years.
The file I put together came in useful this week when there was some insurance issue about the age of the house. The 1841 census details were excellent evidence :)
Glad I can be of some use 8)

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Hi
James Rothnie's brother John  farmed Raitshill when I was little - you could drive a normal car up the track to Raitshill and back  then - I last saw Mary in Sep 2019 - she was still in regular touch with Robin Rothnie her cousin, who apparently still lives at Raitshill - Douglas Clark was running Cauldhame for his Dad George Clark in the 60's or 70's
I will have look in the loft sometime I might have a photo of the end of the house Mr and Mrs Rothnie occupied when I was little  I'll have to get my daughter to scan it when lockdown finishes here
Regards
Mick

Thanks for your interest!
Photos would be great.
Everything seems to be on hold at the moment.
How did you come across my original research into Cauldhame Farm?
I see you are a Rootschat newcomer. I have been a member for some years, so welcome!
People are generally very kind and helpful.
If I can be of any assistance, please ask.

Hi,
My name is Jane and I am the grand daughter of Mary Alley (Rothnie). I was searching for pictures on google of my Grannie’s home, Cauld Hame and was so pleased to come across this chat. I’d love to see what the house looks like now and am happy to pass on some more of the history too. I have fond memories of my Grannie speaking about her life on the farm and I last saw it when I was about 7 (now 35). My Grannie was also a teacher at Tarves school and my Dad also attended there. She was a very strong and determined lady, even at 99, and I know she’d love it if I passed on some of her history. We have a lot of old photographs from the farm and a few drawings of it in her albums.

Alley22,
welcome to Rootschat!
I was quite excited to read your post today :)
I am not quite sure about the rules for personal messages but I think you have to have a few posts before you can have messages.
I would love to see some of your photos and drawings.I have pics of the house today, but do not want to share them publicly.
My daughter and family have lived there for 5 years after spending a similar time at the house down the track. The previous owner first lived there in 2003.
I have compiled a file about the house and its residents back to 1841.
We would love to fill in the gaps from1911 to 2003.
Sounds like you can help. Thanks again.
