I am trying to find a way of working out the number of months between two dates. For example. If you have a marriage date and then the birth date of the first child it would be useful to know if the wedding was as a result of the happy news. Also it would be useful to know the months between the children to see if there were any longer gaps, ie through illness. Tried to do it in Excell but it is near imposible, any ideas.

My apologies but why would you need software to work out the number of months between events?  The number of days I might understand, but there are only 12 months in any year.  :-\ :-X

Take three off the month and add one to the year to get nine months.

In Excel, assume your dates are in cells A1 and A2.

The number of months can be found by the Formula =Month(A1-A2).

I see K Garrad gave a formula, but admit that I can't understand the need for one.

As mentioned, only 12 months in a year, and if you know the names of those and can add or take away numbers up to 10, oh go on, up to 12, nothing else is required - is it?

Maybe I'm thinking in too simple terms  :-\

I gave the formula because OP said:

Just to prove it most certainly wasn't "near impossible"!! ;D ;D

PAF5,  Rootsmagic & familytreemaker all have the facility to do this if you have access to any of them.
The Date calculator is listed in all 3 under tools
