John Pocock/Hannah (?) 1851 census
« on: Wednesday 10 June 15 21:45 BST (UK) »
Hi all
Would really appreciate some help. Trying to trace back Pocock family and have come a cropper with this one

1851 census lists 2 entries for a John Pocock [wifes name Hannah]

First entry is under Shalbourne which apparently can be either Berkshire or Wiltshire
John Pocock 46 b. Inkpen, Berks
Hannah Pocock 52 b.Woodford, Wilts
Emily Pocock 9 (Daughter) b. Shalbourne, Wilts

Second entry is under Abingdon St Helen
John Pocock 44 b.Radley, Berks
Hannah Pocock 50 b.Kennington, Berks
George Pocock 15 b. 'Through' Radley (?)

In each case Hannah is 6years older than John, and their births  range 1799 -1807

Have gone back to the 1841 census and can only come up with 1 John Pocock/Hannah
John Pocock 39
Hannah Pocock 44 (age difference 5years)
Isaac Pocock 15 years
George Pocock 8 years
Thomas Pocock 5years.

Have checked both IGI listings & family search and can find only 1 marriage listed - that of a John Pocock and Hannah Hayter in August 1822. [No parents listed for Hannah Hayter, would appreciate any help on that as well]

When you search for children of John Pocock/Hannah, it returns:

Emma b.1822 Shalbourne
Charles b.1825 Shalbourne
Isaac b.1827 Shalbourne
John b.1828 Shalbourne
Martha b.1830 Radley
George b.1833 Radley
George b.1835 Radley
Thomas b.1836 Shalbourne
Emily b.1842 Shalbourne

They do not list mothers surname.  Now going back to the 1851 census, Emily appears to be with the 'wrong' John and Hannah.

Have I missed something really basic here?

Well done, keyboard86.

The baptisms at Radley are the family at Abingdon - this couple must be the John Pocock who married Hannah Gould 14/12/1828 Radley, Berkshire (on familysearch) and they only have their youngest George with them in 1851 still in Abingdon.

So, Emily, born at Shalbourne, is indeed with the right parents in 1851 and this couple would appear to be the John Pocock and Hannah Hayter married 6/8/1822 Durnford, Wiltshire.   This ties in as Hannah, mother of Emily, is shown as born in Wiltshire on 1851 census Shalbourne.   She was born ca.1799 Woodford, Wiltshire - this would seem to be her baptism:

Hannah Hayter bp.13/5/1798, dau. of Mary Hayter (so would appear to be illegitimate).

(There was another Hannah bp.1794 in Woodford but she appears to be too old to be the one who married John Pocock).

John married to Hannah Hayter was bp.27/2/1803 Inkpen, Berkshire, son of John and Amelia

John married to Hannah Gould bp.26/1/1806 Radley, Berkshire

Don't know which couple is 'yours'.

Thank you all  very much for your quick responses. There were so many Pococks all with similar names and then those age differences being the same was just plain confusing.

As for which one of 'those lot' were mine - I'm still working on that one.

Again many thanks to all

thank you Newburychap
It looked like Thrupp on the census, but it sounded so odd, thought it must be wrong.
