James Hamilton and Margaret fowler
« on: Saturday 13 June 15 21:31 BST (UK) »
hello all

Looking for any help with the following up to date we have George Stewart fowler Hamilton born in 1929 ..

We acquired the birth certificate father listed as James Hamilton and mother Margaret fowler...

They married in 1927..

Marriage States James Hamilton  age 21 father James Hamilton deceased mother Jessie Hamilton Ms ?? Allen

Margaret fowler aged 18 father Joseph fowler deceased mother Matilda fowler Ms ?? Kirkwood

There is a census 1n 1911 showing James and Jessie with son James aged 5 with his parents but can't seem to work out the birth of the father on this census and don't seem to be able to locate 1901

Any help would be appreciated

You don't give any details of how long James & Jessie had been married.  Were they married before 1901?

If yes - you need to give Jessie's birthyear and birthplace plus James birthplace to help with a 1901 search.  Also details of any children born before 1901

If they married after 1901 - Have you looked up the marriage to find his age at that time and also his fathers name and occupation which may help find him in 1901?

If I'm looking at the right family both James and Jessie are shown as born Bo'ness, Linlithgow.

Angie, the only source for the records you are looking for is Scotlands People. The Scottish GRO is sourced through SP for easy online access. Costs are very reasonable really compared to the GRO. There is always a debate about the costs of SP, a few posts on this over the years. People sometimes don't compare to what is the alternative in the rest of the UK.

Once you are able to get further back, it can and should get much easier to find alternative records online. The 20th C material is always tricky for everyone  :-\

Have you got access to one of the subs. services which carry transcripts of the Scottish censuses up to 1901 (original images only via SP)? The 1911 is only available on SP.

From someone's online tree here http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/tree/43104848/person/26880609916 (not sure if you have a subs there), this looks to be the 1901 entry for the Hamiltons:

James Hamilton 38 coal miner b. bo'ness, Linlithgowshire
Jessie Hamilton 38 b. bo'ness, Linlithgowshire
John Hamilton 14 b. Muiravonside, stirlingshire
Ellen Hamilton 11 b. Muiravonside, stirlingshire
David Hamilton 9 b. Muiravonside, stirlingshire
Robins Hamilton 7 b. Muiravonside, stirlingshire
Thomas Hamilton 4 b. Slamannan, stirlingshire
Lizzie Hamilton 2 b. Linlithgow, Linlithgowshire
Marion Hamilton 1 b. Linlithgow, Linlithgowshire
Peter Ferguson 21 boarder coal miner b. Linlithgow, Linlithgowshire

Address: Candie Old Pib, Muiravonside, Stirlingshire [as transcribed for address. The original image on SP would help to confirm address and anything else that is not clear from the transcript].

1891 here too:

James Hamilton 28 coal miner b. Linlithgow
Jessie Hamilton 26 b. Linlithgow
Jessie Hamilton 10
Mary Hamilton 7
John Hamilton 4
Helen Hamilton 10 Months

Address: Candy Rows, Muiravonside, Stirlingshire

...Marriage States James Hamilton  age 21 father James Hamilton deceased mother Jessie Hamilton Ms ?? Allen

From others' research:

James Hamilton Snr may have died on 5 Apr 1919 in Plean, Stirling. Can't easily see his birth on family search index here https://familysearch.org/search but his birth is given as being on  14/10/1862 in Bo'ness, Linlithgowshire.

Wife Jessie Allen, again can't easily her birth online although this is given as being on  22 Mar 1863 in bo'ness, Linlithgowshire. Death 4 Apr 1940 in Stirling St., Denny.

James and Jessie's marriage looks to have been on 24 Aug 1884 in Falkirk Stirlingshire.

All of these details are verifiable on SP, within the dates you can view original images for certs online.

Hopefully this lets you narrow down some entries on SP to view.
