I'm On My Way!
« on: Sunday 14 June 15 03:44 BST (UK) »
Hi Fellow Chatters,
I hope I might be able to get some guidance regarding a couple of questions I have.
My wife and I are planning a trip to Ireland in early September. We are going to land in Dublin and take a train to Kilkenny, where we will rent a car.  I hope to visit Rathanna and Raheendarragh to breathe in the air of my MacDonald/Bryan/Doyle/Neil progenitors. I wonder if someone might know of a B & B or hotel located nearby that area.
The other question I have is, are we making the right decision in taking the train to Kilkenny. This is the only place we could find a car for hire (Enterprise). Any thoughts or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Steve

To get the train you will need to go into the city, a bus would I think be cheaper and leaves from the airport

Thanks Sinann!
You know, we hadn't even considered a bus. We were thinking a nice train ride might be the way to go, but a bus might work. Thanks for the schedule. It is nice and clear.
Thanks again!
Steve

Thanks K,
I was hoping not to have to drive around Dublin, and just get a car when I get to the country.

The train can be roomer of course and faster but I think by the time you get a bus into the city and board a train the bus might be just as quick straight from the airport.
I do like that the bus goes through each town, although than you have to deal with traffic and traffic lights etc. but you get to see places, on trains it's all country side and the back of houses and factories.
This site might be useful
http://www.visitkilkenny.ie/directions_kilkenny_train_bus_road
It has more car hire companies

It's easy driving!
M1 from the airport.
Then the M50/E01 - through the toll.
E20 through Naas.
M9 to Kilkenny.

Your profile doesn't say where in the world you live?
Please be aware that most hire cars in UK & Ireland are stick shift!

I'd rather face some of those zoo animals that escaped :D :D but than Newlands is the closest I've ever driven to Dublin.

Sorry, guys. I'm from Massachusetts. I updated my profile. Driving isn't a huge concern, but I figured if I could take public transpo as far as I could, why not? The bus is actually sounding pretty good to Kilkenny. We can then rent a car and stay in say, Borris, which is pretty close to Rathanna.
Thanks for all the great tips. Please keep 'em coming!
