Hi Groom,

I'm afraid I don't have that info,  I do know that James married Elizabeth (Betty) Hargreaves  19th Oct 1795 which I also got from the same source as the births but I didn't mention any father's names

Did your James have a son called Blackburn?
Such an unusual name would often be passed down through the generations.

There is this James Riley in the 1851 census who has a son called John. Could he be the one baptised 1781? If so, unless it was a second marriage, his wife is Jane. That would mean the other James, son of Blackburn is yours.

Did you check if both lived to adulthood?

Did you consider that neither maybe as Lancashire online are only transcription, so only a clue about where to look for primary records and once you look in those primary rcords you are more than likely to find lots more James Riley's?

Difficult era as you will not get fathers name on his marriage so no connecting proof. You could research siblings so you know names/dates, which could give you a clue to repeated names used in the family through the generations, also if any were visiting each other in later census and also any were named in any marriage records as witnesses at each others marriages

If they married 19th Oct 1795  then wouldnt he be likely to have been born earlier?

1781 would make him 14 at Marriage and 1778 age 17.

Trish :)

Ok, looked over your earlier queries.
So we have;
January 1st 1839 Manchester
George Riley full age Bachelor of Heaton Norris Printer
Father James Riley Weaver***
Mary Hooley full age Spinster of Heaton Norris
Father John Hooley Coal Dealer
George signed his name and Mary made her mark
Witness:
Mark of Elizabeth Hooley
George Hays

And you think this is Georges Baptism?
Baptism: 10 May 1809 St John the Evangelist, Bacup, Lancashire, England
George Riley - [Child] of James Riley & Betty
Abode: Greens***

Then;
Baptism: 27 Feb 1811 St John the Evangelist, Bacup, Lancashire, England
HENRY Riley - [Child] of James Riley & Betty
Abode: Greens
And;
Baptism: 21 Jan 1813 St John the Evangelist, Bacup, Lancashire, England
JAMES Riley - Son of James Riley & Betty
Abode: Greens
Occupation: Weaver

Ok I found this on FreeREG;

BURIAL;
BETTY Riley, Wife of JAMES, 14 Feb 1815, St Nicholas, Newchurch in Rossendale
Age 29 (birth c 1786)
Abode Greens ****

Also at same Church as Bettys Burial;
ALICE, 17 Oct 1807, abode Lawhead, Baptism Bacop Chapel
+
GEORGE, 10 May 1809 (notes Baptism at Bacop)
+
HENRY same Church, 27 Feb 1811 to JAS/BETTY, Baptism at Bacup
+
JAMES, 23 Jan 1813 at St John, Bacup

Now these all look to be the Children of your JAMES/BETTY and it appears she died 1815

It is likely he would then remarry with young Children to look after.

I would be looking for a Marriage if Betty was born c 1786 around 1805/1806.

Lots of Riley and more questions!

I did notice a ELIZABETH Riley Baptised 25 Oct 1820, St John, Bacup
Parents JAMES/ANN
Occp Weaver
Abode Greens

I is possible James was much older and had more than 2 Wives.

Trish :)

PS, could you put the 1841 Census which you think is your James on here please?
