Which prison for Anglesey offenders?
« on: Monday 15 June 15 18:55 BST (UK) »
Which prison would an offender be sent to from Anglesey in 1856.

I have a possible lead on an ancestor who was found guilty of theft at the Beaumaris quarterly sessions in 1856. He was sentenced to six years penal servitude.

Is it likely to be Beaumaris Gaol?

Thanks Cae Howell!

Not sure what would have been better, a working wheel in Beaumaris or transportation to Australia which is what would have happened to my ancestor if he had been found guilty a few years earlier.

I understand that a crime which carried the sentence of penal servitude would have meant transportation to Australia but was changed a year or two earlier.

Probably Beaumaris - in the summer they sometimes re-enact trials etc in the court house in the square and there is quite a lot of info on the internet too

Yes. Beaumaris Jail  is now a museum.  Very realistic  and informative.  Well worth a visit.
