William Hunt
« on: Thursday 18 June 15 21:54 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the father of William Hunt who married Sarah Hobman in Deptford in 1822. They were the parents of artist Wm Holman Hunt, so I am actually looking for the artist's grandfather. Thanks.

Welcome to rootschat, SallA.

William Holman Hunt is in quite a few trees on ancestry - do any of them have the grandfather?

do you have the names of all William and Sarahs other children ??...they can point towards the name of Williams father - IF and it is a big if William was christened in the same church he married in , there looks to be 2 possibilities
Williams marriage date and church he married in  https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NJ9N-SJ2

so the 2 christenings in the same church from 1790 - 1805
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:J397-Y2D

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JM4C-DZK

so if William and Sarah named any of their children Thomas / Catharine or Jane - it would point towards one of the set of parents

oakes,liverpool..neston..backford..poulton cum spittal(bebington)middlewich,cheshire......   sacht,helgoland  .......merrick,herefordshire adams,shropshire...tipping..ellis..  jones,garston,liverpool..hartley.dunham massey..barker. salford

Thanks for that- will have a look into it. Have looked at family trees on ancestry but trail usually stops with Holman Hunt's father. I did find Thomas Hunt on familysearch but wasn't 100% sure it was right.  I now need to confirm Thomas's parents. Ideally they should be called William and Mary Hunt from Kingham Oxfordshire, who are my gx4 grandparents.

Hi

Welcome to rootschat  :)

Trying to approach it from what you know about your family.  Do you have a baptism date for your Thomas who has parents William & Mary, was he born in Kingham.

I'm afraid that alighting on Thomas as William's father seems to be to be jumping the gun at this stage, unless there's solid evidence. Definitely never ever rely on someone else's tree unless you've independently satisfied yourself that they've got it right.

Much better to trace William and see if you can find a birthdate/birthplace for him.

Have you found the family in any of the censuses?  I see that William & Sarah baptised several children (below) at St Giles Cripplegate in the 1820s and 1830s.  William's occupation was consistently Warehouseman - in keeping with "Manager of a warehouse" as he was described on WHH's 1865 marriage.
