Searching for LUKE's in Pembrokeshire
« on: Saturday 20 June 15 18:57 BST (UK) »
I recently found record of a JOHN LUKE, born about 1704 in Nevern, Pembrokeshire, son of OWEN LUKE.  I am optimistic that this John is my 6th great grandfather JOHN LUKE who immigrated to America, but I am not definite.  I am hoping that someone can help me confirm this relationship.  I also do not know when JOHN LUKE departed Wales or if he was married upon his departure, but the date was between his birth and 1743.  I have been unsuccessful in locating any immigration records for John Luke in the U.S. and I understand that no documentation exists in Wales either.

My JOHN LUKE arrived in South Carolina via Philadelphia in 1743.  He requested and was granted 400 acres of land in the Welsh Neck of the Pee Dee River in Marlboro, South Carolina.  Many of these Welsh settlers came from the Welsh Neck of Pennsylvania/Delaware.  Some were Welsh Baptists and some were Quakers.

JOHN LUKE had a wife (name unknown) and six children upon his arrival in South Carolina.  His sons were named John, Owen, Daniel, Enoch, Rees, and Joseph.  I have researched Parish records in Wales, including Pembrokeshire, and noticed that the above Christian names appear to run through the generations of LUKE's that lived in Wales.  The naming patterns of the LUKE families that I have researched in England, Scotland, or Ireland do not come close.

My requests:
Can you help me locate additional information about JOHN LUKE, born 1704 in Nevern, Pembrokeshire?
Are you aware of anyone living in Pembrokeshire today with ties to the old LUKE family from 1600s/1700s?
Do any pedigrees exist for the LUKE family of Wales?
Are you aware of any burial grounds within Pembrokeshire with LUKE burials?

Thank you,
Phil Luke

Find my past have BMD records for Wales on their site with a large number of Luke family members throughout the county of Pembroke.

JOHN LUKE baptised 11 March 1704 NEVERN Pembrokeshire. Father Owen.

There are 3 possible marriages in the 1830s. However I do not see any baptisms for the children mentioned. It also looks more likely that Owen may have been born in Caernarvonshire or indeed elswhere, further research would be required.

Hello Phil,
I'm afraid I can't give you any family info although I am sure we're related from way back.  My branch of Lukes also came from South Wales and I thought you might find it interesting to hear I have just had my DNA done here in the UK through Britainsdna and find that I have ancient Welsh DNA.  Only around 3 percent of men in Wales have it so really quite rare.  Anyway, I thought you might be interested in this.
Best wishes,
Ashley Luke.
