McLAUCHLAN FAMILY SEARCH DUNDEE AND BEYOND
« on: Sunday 21 June 15 15:56 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any living descendants of Alexander McLauchlan born 1838 in Dundee or surrounding area in Scotland.    He married a Marjory/Margery Webster on 13th June 1856 in Dundee.    They had 9 children -     Ann b 12/4/1857, Elizabeth b 25/2/1859,   Christina b 2/3/1861,  Jane b 2/6/1863,  Margaret b 1/9/1865,  Alexander b 3/4/1867,  Margery/Marjory b 3/1/1870,  William b 2/4/1871 and Catherine b 6/3/1871.    All born in Dundee.   Catherine is my Great Grandmother who married my Great Grandfather Charles Wood Beats b 1873 in Dundee in 1897.    Charles and Catherine moved to live in Glasgow around 1900.     Although living in Scotland I haven't been able to find any marriages or deaths for the other family members in any library or Family Search sites.   I hope someone can help.   Thanks.

Adding to that – from the censuses:

Alexander McLauchlan was born in Dull, Perthshire, he died between 1891 and 1901.  Marjory was born in Dundee and a Milliner by trade.

Their youngest child was Robina born about 1875.  By 1901 Robina is married to Thomas B Souter, a Baker, with two children, Thomas, 11 (?) and Marjory, 5.  All are living at 225 Overgate, Dundee

Hi Brigau,   Thank you very much for replying to my enquiry about the McLauchlan family and for finding them.   It throws up answers to a lot of questions that have been rumbling around in my family for many years.    My mother years before she passed away in 2008 would talk about the name Souter and led me to believe that the name was prominent in her family.   When I started researching the family of Beats, I was very surprised to learn that my Great Grandmothers name was Catherine McLauchlan and not Souter as I was led to believe.   My mother was quite bemused when I went back to her and told her what I had found.    My mother was also under the impression that there were no more Beats in Scotland as the family had lost contact with cousins many years before.   On researching the name I found a lot of Beats's in and around the Dundee area and in 2009 met up with them in a Family Get Together in Forfar.    Keeping in touch with a few people I met up with them again last September.   I asked about the name Souter, but no one had heard of that name.   I stayed at the Travel Lodge in Dundee and spent time in the city centre and found the street my GGGrandparents lived in Bell Street.   I was also in Overgate and didn't realise I was so close to where the Souters lived.   Sorry for being long winded,   but I am very glad to have found the Souters.   I know am asking a lot here, but is there any chance you could find out who Alexander McLauchlans parents and possible brothers and sisters were?     I would be most grateful.   Thank you once again.

I was very surprised to learn that my Great Grandmothers name was Catherine McLauchlan and not Souter as I was led to believe.

It seems the name Souter had some family significance well before Robina’s marriage.  According to the records on family search Alexander & Margery’s son William was actually baptised William Souter McLauchlan; Margaret was baptised Margaret Webster McLauchlan and your Great Grandmother, Catherine, born 1873, was baptised Kate Turnbull McLauchlan.

I know am asking a lot here, but is there any chance you could find out who Alexander McLauchlans parents and possible brothers and sisters were?

The only way to be sure of Alexander & Margery’s parents is to purchase their death certs from http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk providing of course that this information was known by the informant.  With the parent’s names confirmed you can then look for possible siblings.  Two likely deaths are showing but none for Marjory/Margery, only Margaret:

Deaths for Alexander m*la*l*n born 1830 +/- 5 years
1897 Alexander McLauchlan St Peter, Angus
1919 Alexander McLachlan St Mary, Angus

Deaths for M m*l*lan, other name Webster, born 1835 +/- 5 years
1902 Margaret McLachlan Lanark
1911 Margaret McLauchlan Lanark

This website has some great photographs of old Dundee, including many of the Overgate as your Great Grandmother would have known it.

Regards,
brigau

ADDED: In 1911 Thomas and Robina SOUTAR were recorded in Lanarkshire.  This census can only be obtained with credits from scotland's people.
