looking for a Death Cert
« on: Tuesday 23 June 15 17:27 BST (UK) »
I cannot find a Death Cert. for Mary Ann Bambrough Born 1846 in Greenock Renfrewshire and Died between 1901 and 1911 in Newcastle upon Tyne possibly Byker. I paid £60 recently for 3 hours Research and Researcher could not find Mary Ann's Death. Last definite time she was alive was December 1899 as Informant on her Son's Death Cert.Son's Name Richard Raine Bambrough,22 yrs old when he Died. I found a Mary Ann Bambrough in 1901 Census who stated she was a Widow aged 56 Born in Scotland and a Servant in a Family named Hall in Byker. I believe this to be her. Mary Ann was a Widow when she ReMarried John Bambrough in 1875. I know everything about Mary Ann (my Gt Gt Grandma) except her Death Date. She is on 1881 Census with lots of mistakes.Stated as Daughter of John instead of Wife and his Daughter Margaret is down as his Wife and  their ages are transposed too. I have been doing Family Research for over 20 years but this has got me beat. Has anyone any suggestions?

Hello & welcome.
Have you tried variations of her surname ?
Have you looked further than 1911 ?
Have you looked for a remarriage ?

Have you found this family in 1891? I've had a look at the 1871 and 1881 census and I'm confused. In 1871 John bambrough age 41 Tripe Dressser had wife Mary Ann born Newcastlle age 42  and amongst his children were Mary Ann 5 and John 2. In 1881 John Bambrough Age 52 Tripe Dresser has wife Margaret age 35 born Scotland and amongst the children is Mary Ann age 16 and John age 13. I am not sure why you have decided that there is an error in the census and that daughter and wife have been transposed. It looks more likely that these are two different wives/partners.

Thanks for replies. I realise you will be confused Isobel. The problem is that John's 1st Wife was also a Mary Ann(nee Murray) and she Died 6 months before he Married my Mary Ann.I can assure you the mistakes in 1881 Census are Mistakes. Mary Ann was his Wife aged 35 Born in Scotland and Margaret was his Daughter aged 16. Mary Ann's children from her 1st Marriage to William Robert Bell are recorded as Bambrough.( George, James, and Ellen Bell) Last 3 children recorded are  to John (Richard, Joseph and Margaret) Joseph Died in 1944 and Margaret Died 1881 same year as Birth. I recently made contact with Grand daughter of Joseph but she was Born after Joseph had Died so had no knowledge of Mary Ann's Death.
Thanks Jim for your interest. A 2nd Cousin of mine told me that Mary Ann Died of Cancer and was Nursed until the end by her Daughter Ellen.Cousin is now 85 and thinks it was about 1905. She is not on 1911 Census.
Thank you again for suggestions.

Thats quite a mystery you've got there rubymar ... If you've ruled out the death occuring overseas, and you've checked for a third marriage and its neither of those, then there's an unknown reason for it not being under Bambrough.

Have you tried extending the death record search to include her previous married name ?  I understand it should be Bambrough but if you've run out of other avenues.....have you looked at this one already ?
Mary Ann Bell death registered Mar qtr 1907 aged 61, Newcastle upon Tyne RD
Ref: 10b 31

Just out of interest, before Mary Ann became Bell, what was her birth name  ?

Have to say I was thinking along those lines as well.
I notice in 1891 Ellen is living with brother George & they are back to being called Bell.
Was Ellen married by 1901 ?
Do you know where she was living at the time ?

Thanks for replies today. Hi Jim1  I searched for Mary Ann's Death  under Married Name of Bell for a few years before I got info. from 2nd Cousin that she had Remarried. I have Census info. from 1861 when she was living with her Widowed Father and 2 younger Brothers in Greenock Renfrew . Shortly after they moved to Newcastle upon Tyne by which time she was Married. Have 1871 Census with her Husband William Robert Bell a Master Butcher and 2 Sons, as Eleanor Elizabeth (to give Ellen her full Name) was Born at end of 1871 Mary Ann  was Widowed in 1873 and again in 1887.I didn't find her on 1891 Census but found a Mary Ann Bambrough I believe to be her in 1901 Census Eleanor Married a Robert Crawford in 1893.These are my Gt Grandparents
Kilkenny Lass  I applied for the Death Cert. you have quoted in 1907 of Mary Ann Bell and it arrived today but is not her. She was stated as the Widow of a Matthew Bell Her Maiden Name was Barker.
Mary Ann's Father was a Potter and he and her Mother had moved from Stoke on Trent  to Greenock to a new Pottery. They Married there in 1845 and Mary Ann was Born 1846.
Anyway, Thank you everyone for suggestions and for your Interest in my search.
