Hi, thanks for your reply.
Basically, JJP married Jane Sweet on 10/06/1863 in Chelsea. Jane was a few years older than him. JJP's first child was born in 1870, Lucy Priest registered as being the mother. He married Lucy on 14/05/1884.
I assume that JJP / Jane had parted and JJP started a relationship with Lucy. It appears that Lucy adopted the 'Johnson' surname almost immediately (1871 Census), maybe because she didn't want to be seen as an unmarried mother!?!?
To make matters worse, their first child (Albert James - my great grandfather) was registered at birth as 'William Albert', but all his records afterwards shows him as Albert James.
Also the surname went from 'Johnson Puddington' to 'Johnson' for some unknown reason. John was known as John Puddington or John Johnson Puddington or John Johnson. Very confusing when you're trying to trace the family!
JJP is the person i need to nail. Where was he in 1861 and 1871? There are criminals records that show that a John Puddington was convicted and sent to Australia, but i believe this is a different character as the birth dates don't match.
JJP was a servant so i would imagine he was living elsewhere, maybe abroad? JJP and Lucy did have three further children: William Johnson (b. 1874 Chelsea), Harry Johnson (b. 1875 Egerton, Lancs) and Ernest Johnson (b.1877 Hartford, Cheshire) which highlights that they moved around.
Help!
Thanks
Martin
