The above is my Great Grandad and I found him in the 1881 census as being listed on a Shaftesbury Training Ship in East Ham.   Apparently all records were destroyed.  can anyone enlighten me about Shaftesbury Training ships and why he may of been on one?.

Hi Sue,

It was an Industrial Training ship for wayward boys and owned by the Shaftesbury Children's Homes organisation.  For background see http://www.rootschat.com/links/01fjp/

Hi Br1gau,

Thank you for that,  It is listed in 1881 census as Shaftesbury Training ship in East Ham,  what is strange I cannot find his Parents in the 1881 Census so whether something happened I have yet to find out.  his Parents were John Frank Bailey b1846 in odiham, Hampshire,  Susan Elizabeth Plumstead b1847 in Shoreditch, London. They lived in the Lambeth area.

There's a marriage 3 Apr 1881 St George the Martyr Southwark between Susan Elizabeth BAILEY (father Henry Plumstead) and Edward GIBSON (father Thomas).

Well spotted  :)

Can't see an obvious death for John Frank Bailey, although plenty of possible John Baileys.

3rd April 1881 was census night, could this be the right people at London Road, St Saviour, Southwark?

Thx Maureen,  I did come up with that and she is down as a widow,  could be that she re married,  the Father on original marriage was Edmond,  maybe he had died also and Henry was an uncle, it could be a match hopefully.

thx again,  Sue

Thx guys,  think on the right,  just need to find a death for John Frank Bailey or John Bailey between 1871 and 1881 as he was around in 1871.
