Welcome to rootschat, Outlook 85.

This looks like your grandparents' marriage:

Marriages March quarter  1931
Mary E McKay    Westhampnett  2b   666
William J Mills    Westhampnett  2b   666

You can then look for births on free bmd for children with parents Mills/McKay, probably in the Sussex area

http://www.freebmd.org.uk

(Possibly 9 from 1931 to 1952)

Rootschat is not keen on discussions about living people (even with their permission)

Have you got your parents' marriage certificate, for confirmation of their fathers' names?

Their marriage and her previous marriage can easily be found on free bmd.

Have you got her year of birth, and is she alive?

Thanks

I didn't know them - just checking that I had found the right people.

If you have certificates then that is a great start.  The best way to help us to help you is to provide all the firm info you have, including transcribing every detail from those certificates, and then identify the gaps in your knowledge which you would like to fill.  We can then (usually!) help you to do that :)

An online tree (yours?) has Mary Ellen McKay's birth as 5th August 1909 Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland. They give her parents as John McKay and Elizabeth Baltitate, but no dates or places of birth.

If that is the right family, the couple seem to be in Dumbarton in 1901 with sons Patrick 3 and John 1.

The father John was said to be born abt 1869 Belfast.  He may have died in the next few years. The free index for 1911 suggests Elizabeth and children (including 1 yr old Mary Ellen) may be enumerated in Byker as McKie.

You'd need to look at the underlying census schedule for full detail including marital status, how many years married, and how many children born & died.

Have you got the birth certificate of Mary Ellen McKay for her Mother's maiden name?

There is a distinct lack of records for the surname Baltitate(if your tree - but you mentioned Ballentyne)

Elizabeth was English and born in 1876 according to the 1901 census.

You need Scotlandspeople for scottish records.
