Alice Edith Stewart/Stuart
« on: Sunday 28 June 15 16:55 BST (UK) »
I am looking for my grandmother. Alice Edith STEWART/STUART.  I can find her on the 1881 Census age 3yrs as a boarder with another family.  I can find no trace of a birth.  Her birth year would be 1877 as we always celebrated her birthday on 1st August.  She appears to have been born in St. Nicholas, Aberdeen.  her father named on her marriage certificate was George Stewart Dec'd.  Anyone out there can help.

When I look on there nothing shows up to match her.  I would guess the St Nicholas one would be her. I have used Scotland's People before without success.  I must be doing something wrong if you can see a record!!

Hi in 1891 is Alice aged 14 with:-

Mary Stuart 45 Widow
Margaret 17
William 11
Residing Longacre St Nicholas

In 1881 a Margaret 7 and a William T 1 are with an Isabella Buchan in St Nicholas , maybe this is another possible Alice or the 1877 birth?

Nothing seems to add up.   Her surname was spelt STEWART on her marriage certificate. She died in March 1969 age 92, her birthday was August so that would make her birth 1876.  I can't find an Alice with a father George. The Alice living with Mary, a widow in 1891 has the surname spelt Stuart !!
Grrrrr.  I am so frustrated, I have been trying to find a record of her birth for years.  So far I am stumped.  I have just about looked at all the Alice Stewart/Stuart records on Scotlands People.  I don't know where to go from here.  She ended up in Somerset growing up with an Aunt.  Again I can find no trace of her there either.  Grrrrr, again.  Help please.

Hi, I was always told she grew up with Aunt Ellen, could have been Helen. No surname, I have no idea if she had a husband or not. I have tried to trace her but no luck.   Yes Alice Edith did marry in Bristol, lived in London in the early 1900's then settled back in Bristol after their youngest son died in 1914.  I knew my grandmother when I was a child, but in those days you didn't ask about family history.

What does the death certificate say?

I had an aunt who arrived in Canada and got married in the 1840s. Everyone thought the husband was the father of the child. They spent years searching for the certificate. She had actually got herself pregnant out of wedlock in Scotland, and emigrated to Canada with child in shame. Not everything you know is always correct.

I would start with the death certificate, as that should name the mother and father.
