Drew family Liverpool, and before that ... ?
« on: Monday 29 June 15 21:01 BST (UK) »
Hello
I would welcome any advice please. Using Findmypast and Ancestry I have found my way back, with a high degree of confidence, to gt gt gdad William b.1846 to John Drew and Mary (Alexander). John and Mary died 1847 and 1849, and Will went to the workhouse, then made good. However I can't make any progress back from that.  They lived in Oriel St slum (80% Irish) but I haven't been able to find a marriage, to get parents names etc, so they may have been married in Ireland?  Anyway I don't know how to drill any deeper and I would be very grateful for any ideas, please?
Thanks for reading this.
Jim

You could try buying the death certificates for the two parents. That may give you additional pieces of the jigsaw puzzles

My Bradys lived in Oriel Street around about the same time as your Drew family they were in Court 10. You've said the parents were John Drew and Mary Alexander and as William's RC baptism from St Mary's on 13 Dec 1846 tells us he was born on 4 Dec 1846 but doesn't give a maiden name for his mother then perhaps you got that surname from William's birth certificate?

There may have been a brother called James Drew he was baptised at St Mary's RC on 25 Jun 1843, born the same day to John and Mary Drew, buried at the St Mary's CE (Parish) cemetery on 13 Nov 1843, aged 4 months, address was Marlborough Street so just along Vauxhall Road from Oriel Street.

Dear Blue
Thanks, yes, I have him, and his certs. I did get Mary's maiden name off Will's cert.  I was surprised that on James' birth cert Mary was given as "late Harkins formerly Alexander" so she was married before, but I can find no trace of that marriage either. Were your Bradys Irish?  If so, do you know where they were from - just a long shot.  John Drew died at 4 Oriel St, but the informant present at death was Winifred McGowan of no.8, so they perhaps all knew each other?
Dear Jim 1
Yes I have her details, but I can't seem to find out anything for certain prior to the birth of the kids.
Dear Nanny Jan
No, nothing
Dear Scouseboy
I have John's (the registrar made a dogs dinner of it - all crossing out and corrections) but doesn't give me much and am waiting for Mary's from GRO.
Thanks again to all of you!

Hi Jim

My Brady family were from County Cavan they're at house 6 court 10 Oriel Street in 1851. They were there for several years. Oriel Street was quite notorious for poor living conditions. I had to wait until the 1871 and 1881 Census for County Cavan to be recorded alongside Ireland as place of birth. Cavan is home of the Bradys it's like being Jones from Wales! The first Liverpool record for my lot was a baptism/birth from 1848 in Court 10 Oriel Street.

Have you looked on the Roots Ireland website? I used to be able to do third party searches on there for other people but they changed it so people can't do that any more. The problem with this is your probably needing a marriage or two from parish records that may or may not exist. Some parishes don't go back that far. At least you have a few names to work with and the mother being previously married could be helpful.
