Isobel Annie Youd
« on: Friday 03 July 15 21:59 BST (UK) »
Isobel Annie Youd was my mother.  Before she died she told me she was a student nurse at Crumpsall Hospital in Manchester in 1951 but had to leave when she fell pregnant. Can anyone confirm this or does someone remember her? Thanks.

Welcome to Rootschat. Please don't mention names of anyone who may still be living.

Are you trying to confirm that she was a nurse there or that she was pregnant in 1951? There is a birth of a Youd in Manchester in 1951 - this can be seen on Freebmd http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

You could contact the hospital and ask if they have any records of your mother working there.

That's interesting as that doesn't fit with the birth in 1951, so forget that birth.

There are registrations for births under her married name in March 1952 - looks like twins?

Thanks for your replies.  Yes, she gave birth to twins in December 1951 after marrying my father Arthur Jackson.  I really want to know whether she was actually a student nurse at the hospital. I'm confused because her marriage certificate in July 1951 says she was in the W.R.A.F. at the time!

Could she have been training to be a nurse in the WRAF?

If she was in the WRAF then her service record will be held by the MOD; if your father is alive he can apply for a free copy, if not you can apply but the cost, I think, is £30.

It did occur to me she may have been a nurse with the WRAF but I don't know where.  She definitely said it was Crumpsall Hospital although she did tell me some massive porkies as I've recently discovered!  My father died in 1965.  I may well apply for a service record. Thanks for that :-)
