Wilson Icklesham
« on: Sunday 05 July 15 03:45 BST (UK) »
I am researching the possibility that my great grand father was James Wilson born Icklesham Sussex approx 1855, son of Charles Wilson and Caroline Pattenden. My grandfather, James Salmon, was illegitimate and no father is mentioned on his birth certificate, but other information points at James Wilson as a possibility.  I would like to make contact with any descendants of Charles and Caroline to assist in my search.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat!  :)
What other information do you have that makes you think James Wilson is the gather of your ancestor?
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Pine/Pyne, Dowdeswell, Kempster, Sando/Sandoe/Sandow, Nancarrow, Hounslow, Youatt, Richardson, Jarmyn, Oxlade, Coad, Kelsey, Crampton, Lindner, Pittaway, and too many others to name.
Devon, Dorset, Gloucs, Cornwall, Warwickshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Wilts, Germany, Sweden, and of course London, to name a few.

Hi

Welcome to rootschat  :)

but other information points at James Wilson as a possibility.

What information is this.  :-\  Do you have a baptism for James Salmon as they sometimes name the father in an illegitimate birth.

Is this James Salmon, or a totally unrelated person?

Births June quarter  1881   James Salmon   Hastings    2b   18

Have you looked in Surname Interests (underneath Your Tools) to see if anyone is researching Caroline Pattenden or either of the Wilsons?

(Caroline born about 1812 from 1851 census?)

Thanks for responses and James Wilson info.  Yes James Salmon was bn June 1881. THere is no father's name on the birth certificate. In 1891 James Wilson approached Barnardos offering to take care of James Salmon, but Barnardos had no record of any relatives and would not let James W take him.  James W was married to James S's aunt Elizabeth Fletcher. They had no children.  Of course there could be many reasons why James W went by himself to Barnardos instead of Elizabeth, and I realise it is tenuous, but James W is the only candidate I have.  It can probably only be resolved by a DNA test and would be an interesting exercise whatever the outcome, as I am very interested in learning more about genetic genealogy.
