If you've a cousin living locally, wouldn't that cousin be best able to use Local Records Office to see actual maps and land records of the area? I've found various ones really wonderfully helpful, some even allowing photography of documents.
Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland . Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)

Many thanks everyone.  Will follow up the leads.  Don't really want to ask my cousin as I was going to surprise him with the information when I next see him.

Just had a thought.  I suppose it would make sense for me to arrange to go to the Local Record Office if I have no joy.  Thanks for the advice.
