Hi Katherine,
I can't see John H yet but there is a record of a Violet Hughes leaving Liverpool 17 Oct 1911 she had children John H and Edgar H travelling with her, they were bound for Sydney.
Name of the ship "SS Devon"

To help with age the marriage of John Herbert and Violet took place St Philips Church Camberwell  25 Dec 1900
John was a 35 year old bachelor and a Seaman Violet was 18 years of age.

So I could be wrong with that record. I did think it odd that they travelled from Liverpool when according to the 1911 census they lived in Greenwich.

Just noting that Edgar would be very young to travel, however, he did live and die in QLD

1972 C6099 Edgar Hughes
Parents John Herbert Wheley HUGHES  and Violet SHARPE.

I wonder whether, as a seaman, John Herbert made his way as sailor and joined his wife in Australia.

Another child was born in Qld.

1912   B30025 Mary Ellen   HUGHES
Parents John Herbert and Violet SHARP
This was an October birth.

And they were registered to vote by 1917.  He was still a seaman.

The son John Herbert enlisted for WW2 and his record is digitised.  He was a Prisoner of War.

Here is the death of the husband of Violet.

Mother not listed.

Here is the death of the son John who travelled with his mother to Australia.

There were other children to the couple.

1911 seams to be harder to find. I found Violet sharp who came to Sydney 1911 with John and Edgar just after the Census in England. It seems him and George aren't on the list and I think they may have travelled on a different ship or John Came alone to Sydney.
