RMS Aquitania 1914 *COMPLETED*
« on: Tuesday 07 July 15 06:25 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

As you can see I'm after information on the Aquitania from 1914. Thanks to the release of the Merchant Navy records of 1915 I have been able to find out that my grand father served on the Aquitania in 1914. From what i can gather he served on her maybe July/August of that year. Are there any documents surviving from that era? Especially since she was transformed into an armed cruiser for the month of August. He was a trimmer on board all of his ships
Thanks
Paul

Not sure what is available on the internet,  But would suggest the Merseyside Maritime Museum.  I am pretty sure that she was a Cunard boat, as the general rule is:    if the last two letters  are "ia"  then she was Cunard owned.

Indeed a Cunard liner; sister ship of Lusitania and Mauretania.

If the records exist they will be in Southampton City Archives with a microfiche copy at TNA Kew.

The Central Index Register of Merchant Seamen is a collection of over a million and a quarter merchant navy service record cards. It has details of people serving on board British registered ships between 1918 and 1941.  The SCC Archives staff will undertake searches at 15 per hour.
