RMS Aquitania 1914 *COMPLETED*
« on: Tuesday 07 July 15 06:25 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

As you can see I'm after information on the Aquitania from 1914. Thanks to the release of the Merchant Navy records of 1915 I have been able to find out that my grand father served on the Aquitania in 1914. From what i can gather he served on her maybe July/August of that year. Are there any documents surviving from that era? Especially since she was transformed into an armed cruiser for the month of August. He was a trimmer on board all of his ships
Thanks
Paul

Not sure what is available on the internet,  But would suggest the Merseyside Maritime Museum.  I am pretty sure that she was a Cunard boat, as the general rule is:    if the last two letters  are "ia"  then she was Cunard owned.

Indeed a Cunard liner; sister ship of Lusitania and Mauretania.

If the records exist they will be in Southampton City Archives with a microfiche copy at TNA Kew.

The Central Index Register of Merchant Seamen is a collection of over a million and a quarter merchant navy service record cards. It has details of people serving on board British registered ships between 1918 and 1941.  The SCC Archives staff will undertake searches at £15 per hour.
