Have you checked with Newham archives/local studies if they have East Ham absent voter lists from ww1?  If they do, you may find a service number/regiment for him that you can use to search the military collections/newspapers possibly exposing some more clues about him.

doris wildings mothers name was powling
doris was living with the southgates at the address you mentioned in 1939. you could have a look at neighbours and see if there is an unusual name you could try to trace to a living person.

have you tried to follow up the southgate connection and see if anyone knows anything from a living southgate person

ancestry has two trees one alan and one rons, both seem very similar, are you sure you are not making an assumption from the other tree. What information are you certain of?
