Ferguson- 1759 Stokesley N Yorkshire??
« on: Sunday 12 July 15 16:38 BST (UK) »
Could anybody help or have a info?. I have traced back my ancestry to John Ferguson born 1759 Stokesley. He also married Margaret Hutton and the family moved to Longnewton later.
I cannot find anything after him on the Ferguson line? On his birth index it states his father was also called John Ferguson but no other info is available?
I have taken ancestry DNA tests and my YDNA is of Irish/ Scottish R1B-M222. I am undergoing another deeper test at the moment as it is believed I may have matches in the Scottish Highlands who DNA matches mine, and their last known ancestor was a Jacobite who fought at culloden.
It would be very interesting for me to find out how or why my ancestors ended up as agricultural labourers in north Yorkshire if they did come from the highlands? I have researched that in 1715 there was a jacobite rebellion and many soldiers where imprisoned in York castle nearby and most where let go. Could it be possible that they stayed in the area rather than go back home to Scotland? It seems unlikely but its all I can make sense of?
Any help would be great? I am very new to all this but have made lot of progress in a short period however it all ends here?
Thanks

You could try looking for a will of either John, this may help

http://www.wyjs.org.uk/documents/archives/Collections%20Guide%204.pdf

Also re the Jacobites that may be a misleading thought for example a tree on ancestry suggests John's father and grandfather were born in Yorkshire - although they do not cite proof for this

You could also try and find the parents marriage that may help
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

Hi,

According to the records John's father John was a Sailor.  There's a marriage John Ferguson and Mary Morton 1753 Stokesley and a couple of sisters for your John also baptised in Stokesley.

On the marriage record it says that both John Ferguson and Mary Morton were from the parish but it doesn't necessarily mean John was born there, just living there when he got married.  Being a Sailor I suppose he could have come from anywhere.

Hope this helps a bit and good luck with your research

Thanks Lyn! and David.

That was a great help. I think I may have found where his father might have been born? There was a John Ferguson born in Leake in 1734 which is a close distance to Stokesley and puts him at the right sort of age? However I just don't want to be barking up the wrong tree that's all?

Hi,

You're very welcome. I would be very careful just using the index.  John may well have been born in Leake but there are many records that have not yet been transcribed, so he could easily have been born somewhere entirely different.

Perhaps trying to trace what happened to John's sisters may yield some clues.  If you're very lucky and can find marriages and baptisms of children for them somewhere in Yorkshire that has Dade records that would give a very good lead on the family.

It might also be worth trying to find any records for his father's  time as a Sailor, although having said that I too have a Sailor in the mid-1700's but haven't found anything yet.

My great-great-grandmother was called Dorothy Ferguson and was born in Longnewton in about 1827. Her parents were Robert Ferguson and Mary Pearson. It would be interesting to see if there is any connection to your tree.
