German Surname REESE
« on: Wednesday 15 July 15 12:07 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Ive got an ancestor by the name of Johanna Louise Therese Reese who was born in 1862 Germany but Reese doesnt seem very German to me? Im trying to find information on her prior to her marriage in London 1888 but nothing seems to come up? Can anyone suggest any alternative German surnames for Reese?

Thanks in advance x

Reese is a German surname. Pronounced rayz-uh.

Possibly indicates family origins from around Rees in the Rheinland (Prussia).

Or is REESE the englisch pronunciation of the german name ?
In which case, RIES, RHIES or maybe even RHIESE, RIESE, RHIESER, RIESER could be possible.

"Adam Riese" is very well known, and his name is often used (in colloquial german) to signify mathematical knowledge.
"[Das macht] nach Adam Riese... " = according to Adam Riese ... meaning, "that is correct !"

Do you have the marriage certificate? What was her father's name?

Any clues as to her birthplace in subsequent censuses ?

She is listed as being from Brunswick in the 1891 census. She was the daughter of Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Reese and Johanne Dorothee Caroline Henriette Bocker.

I don't know if anyone is still following this string but I have Reeses of German origin in my family tree as well.  My 3rd great grandfather, George Reese, was born 2 Feb 1808 in Frankfurt.  I haven't been able to trace this line any further back.

To JonT. I have a George Reese, great-great Grandfather, from Frankfurt am main, born February 2, 1808, Germany. Came to USA and moved around different areas - mostly Kentucky & Indiana - died Aug 29 1889, Floyds Knobs, Floyd, Indiana, USA. Like you I cannot find the Germany family - his family before him. My grandfather, Roy Reese, told me our Reese family was from Wales and that they went to Germany, and from Germany to America. Later, I wondered if it was true, or perhaps ashamed to claim German heritage after WWII. Good luck on your endeavors - I still look from time to time myself.

Yes, your grandfather Roy Reese was a brother of my great grandfather Webster Paul Reese.  I've run across several descendants of Roy on Ancestry.  My Ancestry username is JonThyng.
