How to find out if you have a half sibling?

My father passed away 10 years ago and there has always been some suggestion that I may have a half sibling (even my dad was not sure as the woman disappeared). I have the name of the woman my father was seeing at the time. Without trying to locate and contact her as she was not a nice woman, is there any way I can find out if she has a child of a certain age? Thank you

If the woman was unmarried, you can look for a birth using her surname and it should show the same surname as mothers maiden name

If she was married/widowed/divorced - the child would be registered in her married name but mothers maiden name would be different

Ancestry is available at many libraries

If you don't have a subscription to Ancestry or FindMyPast at home, check out your local library as many offer free access at the library.

You can search the GRO birth with FindMyPast or Ancestry but you have to know the surname of the woman who had the baby as the baby may not have been recorded with your father's surname.

If you do not know how to use the birth index online, try to find you own birth entry first as that will help.
