Joseph Henry Stockport (1889 - 1932)
« on: Friday 17 July 15 09:01 BST (UK) »
Hi folks,

If this is the wrong forum for this post then please feel free to move it where it needs to go! I am very new to the forums here.

I recently ordered and received my first certificates from my family tree, which was very exciting. They are for my great grandfather, Joseph Henry Stockport who lived in the Herrington area of Durham. He was a coal miner by trade (most of my ancestors on his side were miners!) but also a First World War veteran. Sadly, injuries he incurred in WWI led to the development of epilepsy, and his death certificate confirms that this ultimately claimed his life in 1932.

If anyone else is researching Joseph, or has him in their family tree I would love to share the information I have with you, and perhaps learn something more about him too. Please send me a private message and I would be very happy to share the certificates details.

Stefan

Hi Stefan and welcome to Rootschat.

if you look at the bottom of the page under Your Tools you will see Surname Interests. If you put in Stockport you will be able to see if anyone else is researching the family and make contact. Best of luck  ;D

I thought it best to post my next question here rather than opening up a new thread ... but now I have those certificates a discrepancy has appeared. My great grandfather was born in 1889, his birth record, his war records, and pretty much everything else I have on him supports this date. Except his original marriage certificate! I am really lucky to have the original document from 1919 when he married my great grandma, but it states that he was 34 when he married in 1919. This is about 4 years out, he should be 30 on this document.

Does anyone have any ideas or experience when it comes to this sort of thing? I am totally confident I have his birth year, his death year, and census records, war records, that support him being 30 in 1919, but the marriage certificate clearly states his age at 34. Little confused, would appreciate any advice!

Is he trying to appear older because his bride is older?

It can be very easy to write down the wrong age if not paying attention.

How old does it say his wife is?

That's a very good point, his wife (Ellen) is listed on the marriage certificate as 38 (which is correct according to the other sources I have for her). If he was trying to appear older then that would explain that, I just wonder if that would be a common sort of thing for the time period, not wanting to cause a "scandal" (for want of a better word) by marrying a woman eight years his senior.

Thanks for the reply too :-)
