The first problem is that the 'facings' - collars and cuffs - should be the same collar. That is on the red tunic.  But in this supposed period they wore khaki in India. The helmet looks tropical and the shape looks like a wider brim, so may be the Wolsey pattern introduced in India in the late 1890s.

So I think someone has coloured in a khaki tunic to look like a red tunic.

The best chance of discovering his regiment is to find his service record on Findmypast; and there are lots of Thomas Kellys.

Hi Ken,

Thank you so. Much for taking the time out to assist me, I did have a look on FindMyPast, like you said, lots of them!, I had the photo cleaned and restored, Thomas joined the 3rd Lancashire Fusiliers reserves in 1914, again, with his surname, it's difficult to find his records, I have trolled through several websites but cannot seem to get any further

The Special Reserve replaced the Militia in 1908. If his record for this survives it will be on Ancestry. It will give the regiment in the photograph under 'previous service'. But two-thirds were lost in a fire in 1940.

Thank you Ken for the kindness of your guiding hand, it can only be worthwhile to have a look at Ancestry
