Birth in Paris 1865 - George Henry BICKHAM
« on: Saturday 18 July 15 21:30 BST (UK) »
Hi, 3 siblings were apparently born in Paris in the 2nd half of the 19th century. Their father was a Tin Plate Worker. No idea what he was doing in Paris. He also made Gas Meters.
Any idea if there may be some birth records anywhere, please? Over the years we have drawn a blank.
Thank you, all.

Thanks, Millie. We have all the censuses, but can't find any French records.

Given that George's birth was in 18e, the others might be actually outside Paris (e.g. Seine St. Denis), in outer suburbs.  Or perhaps the later births were not registered with the French authorities, particularly if Frederick was born shortly before they left.

Looking at the 1865 birth, they were residing at Rue de la Goutte d'Or, George was a tinsmith at the time, as were the two witnesses - a John Stokes (address Rue Leconte?? l'?) and a Joseph Wright (rue Leonie which apparently no longer exists but was in 18e, both aged 31.

This suggests that there was an employment connection and a local English community which the Bickhams were part of - at various times in history you see British workers with a very specific skill-set brought over to France, often to work in companies set up or part-owned by British investors.  It may have been the start of the Franco-Prussian war and/or the general unrest (leading up to the Paris Commune) which caused the Bickhams and other English families to return.

John Stokes was in Paris earlier than the  Bickham family, and had children born there:
28 Nov 1861: Elizabeth, daughter of John Stokes and wife Mary Dear (married in London) - witnesses are both tinsmiths, a Henry Perrey and a Jean Gibbee

4 May 1863: George James, to the same parents, witnesses are again tinsmiths, a William Olivier and a George Fleming who lived at Rue de la Goutte d'Or.

They also had some children who died in Paris 18e
7 May 1866: Catherine, aged 9 years 7 months, born London.
17 Nov 1867: Edward Charles, aged 11 months, born "sur cet arrondissement"

The birth associated with the last death, interestingly, has made it to the localised indexes (he was born 23 Dec 1866 and registered on the 25th!) but not to the ten-year tables.  So perhaps there is a birth for the younger Bickhams, just mis-indexed somehow.
