1930s Hove directory look-up please: Seymour or Husted
« on: Tuesday 21 July 15 07:54 BST (UK) »
If anyone could look at local directories for Hove through the 1930s, or even 1940s, for Herbert Seymour, who was also known as Herbert Seymour Husted, I should be grateful for details.
One possible address is 30 Holland Road.  Any clues as to his occupation would be useful (if any).
He is believed to have died in Hove in 1944 and his mother Lillias in 1935.  Both were born in New York, USA.
Thank you,
Ainslie

I can't see him under either name in Kelly's 1938 directory.    Did he leave a will?  The death as Herbert Seymour registered in Hove in the last quarter of 1944 gives a birth year of 1874.    Is that correct?
Lillias J Husted death registered last quarter 1935 shows birth year as 1847.

1898 immigration record New York to Liverpool just shows him a "Gent" age 26.
There do appear to be Army records for a Herbert Seymour Husted and also a marriage in 1903.   Is this yours or could there be two of them?

His mother Lillias is living in London in 1911 and of private means but I assume you have this.

Thank you for two rapid responses.
All your discoveries agree with mine.  Herbert was born in NY, in a wealthy family, came to England, joined the British army and was commissioned in a militia battalion.  He served in South Africa during the 2nd Boer War with a colleague whose sister he married in the year after his return.  After fathering two daughters, he left his UK family, dropped the 'Husted' from his name and we believed he returned to USA (passenger list).  He must have returned to UK during or before the 1930s, but may still have had independent means.
The Brooklyn Eagle newspaper has a number of legal notices over many years, mostly about Herbert's father's will and one of them gave the clue to his presence in Hove.
I  have not traced a will/probate for Herbert or his mother.

Who did he marry?    Names of the daughters?     You might get clues from their marriages or the 1911 census for them.

Sorry for delay, been out of action.
Husted married Margaret Blyth in Liverpool, 1903 [modified].  One daughter married, the other remained single.  I have fairly full details of their lives.
Margaret was using Seymour as surname in 1911, but at her death in 1954 she was recorded as Seymour Husted.

Yes, that is my thread, too.

I know.  It helps for people to know all the information that has been found so they don't duplicate past efforts.
