SVO Abbreviation in 1851
« on: Tuesday 21 July 15 19:39 BST (UK) »
A possible ancestor's trade is described in the 1851 census as 'SVO' - any idea what it means?

Thanks for looking!

Thank you both for your replies.
I'm afraid that there's no military connection - this is the 21 year old disgruntled son (down as 'Visitor' but certainly son) on an Ag. Lab. in Northumberland. The page reference quoted by Ancestry is H.O. 107 2415 and if this won't access him he's
John Scott born 1829 at St John Lee Northumberland categorised as 'Visitor' in the home of William Scott (60) and Ann Scott (52) at Gunnerton, close to Chollerton

I can't make out what it says, and I'm not entirely convinced it says SVO, but whatever it is it's not been put there by the enumerator - it's been added later by someone extracting information from the census page - the handwriting is quite different.

Exactly the same squiggle appears on page 19 against John Henderson (also a 'visitor')

The 1851 Cenus reference is HO107 Piece 2415 Folio 419 Page 16. In 1861 he is a Commercial Clerk RG 9 Piece 3814 Folio 88 Page 9. Age 21 I don't think it likely he would be a Senior Valuation Officer. This is the 1851 image.
