Admiral Sir Robert Lambert
« on: Wednesday 22 July 15 13:10 BST (UK) »
Hi
My query refers to Admiral Sir Robert Lambert. A number of travel books in South Africa mention him as being honored in that the town LambertsBay was named after him and that he was Chief of the Station at the Cape during 1820-40 and that he was responsible for the detailed Marine survey done around the South African West Coast. The only reference I can get of him in these water come from : . The African Court Calendar & Directory of 1822 (p. 155)which states that Robert Lambert (son of Captain Robert Lambert RN) Rear-Admiral of the White arrived at the Cape. My assumption is that he is the Robert Lambert (b. 1771 d.1836)
Any help will be appreciated
Regards
Johann

Yes, it's weird. His name varies on Google. He lived 1796 to 1869. There is a website on a South African wine that is named after him (Sir Lambert). This Site appears to be the only one that mentions his South African service (I haven't read them all). Better have a look at the Wiki Sites until one of the experts sees your Thread.

Thanks for the feedback, but that is one of the problems that I have with just looking at websites. The people marketing the wines have the wrong person. They are referring to Admiral Sir Robert Lambert Baynes (b. 1796) who operated mostly in the Americas and there is no mention of him in the South African context.

Hi,

Could these be about him? I'm expect you've already seen them, but just in case,

If this is the right man he seems to have been in command of St Helena Naval Station between July 1820 and September 1821 when Napoleon died, but he never met him.

As the January 1820 Navy list has a Rear Admiral Robert Lambert as in the Cape of Good Hope I wonder if he sailed to St Helena after that and then returned to Africa?

Oh no, it can't be the same man, a notice of his death in the Hampshire Advertiser 24 September 1836 says that he returned to England in 1822.

It's all most confusing ::)

Daisy
