1851 Sample Census - BAILEY, Stoke on Trent
« on: Friday 24 July 15 21:08 BST (UK) »
Hi, I have just come across this on Ancestery, and the family I am looking for are there on it.  Could you tell me why I cannot find them on the full 1851 cencus, or were certain people not put on it ?
 Thanks Helen.

The full one is on there, I've clicked on the sample before - I've no idea what it is (maybe it's free to access? and the full only for subscription members?)

hi, I am a member of Ancestery, I can find the family in 1861 but not 1851, just stumbled upon them on this sample cencus - Elizabeth Bailey 58, Thomas bailey 50 and children Elizabeth, Eliza, Emma, Fanny, Henry, Robert, Thomas and William. Living in Shelton, stoke-on-trent.  Thanks,

My father   and I were Census enumerators,  my father did more than I did.

I realise 100  years separates 1961;  1971 and 1981  to the census in the middle of the 19th century.              As a check  on the accuracy of the full Census.  A sample was re-visited  and   a comparison was made with the answers to the full census.           This served several purposes.

One of which  may detect   sloppy and slipshod  Enumerators.

Has it always been good practice  to have a system of validating the results?

The sample of the 1851 census was made by Professor Michael Anderson between 1 October 1972 - December 1977, it was not done at the time the census was taken. See http://discover.ukdataservice.ac.uk/catalogue?sn=1316 and http://www.genealogyreviews.co.uk/ftm1851Hawgood.htm
