help decipher name on 1861 census - completed with thanks
« on: Sunday 26 July 15 02:13 BST (UK) »
This is part of the Ickford 1861 census, I'm wondering if the lady's name is "Martha Cherry" and how old she is? (I thought it was 43?).

I have another thread about "Martha" going at the moment,
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=726454.msg5709644
but couldn't attach the image to the post there?? Hopefully someone here can at least help to make sure I have the right name and age.

Thanks in advance.

43 is the age I see

The name is a bit harder to make as  Martha

If you look at the original the street name is North East? End , yet the RTH on North is different to the supposed RTH in Martha - odd

I think the name starts with a B as per the transcription. It is identical to the B of Benjamin further down the page.
Check the 1851 census to see if 'Barbra' and daur Emily are together there?

Barbara is a pauper servant in the Thame Union Workhouse in 1851. I can't easily see Emily though. She is single, born Tiddington (transcribed as Liddington) and her age looks to be 29 ... :-\

I now think that Barbara is a lot more possible than Martha. My hesitation is more with what records and history maddys52 has rather than an interpretation  :)

Oh thank you so much everyone! - much better eyes than mine obviously  ;)

I don't have any info about Barbara. As I mentioned on my other post, I have a family of Cherrys from Tiddington (who moved to Ickford) baptised in Albury around 1813 - 1816, and when I saw the name in the 1861 census I wondered if she was related, and started hunting for a baptism to try to establish which branch of the family she might be from.

Thanks again for establishing that she is actually Barbara - now I'll try to find out if she is related.  :)

There of lots of B(for Bucks)s in the birthplace column. :)
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.
