Thomas Neal(e) b1801
« on: Sunday 26 July 15 18:48 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Wonder if any one can help as I'm not getting anywhere in my research?

My family tree stalls at Thomas Neal (or Neale), born 1801 in Elford, Staffordshire. He married Maria Gadsby (1803-1840) on 12th March 1821 in Edingale, Staffordshire.

I can found out about his children but I can't find if Thomas had any brothers or sisters, or who his parents are.

Thanks in advance,

did you get his birth year from a census ??....there is only one record showing for Thomas Neil showing in Elford and it is not Neal / Neale
some people did tell fibs about their age on census records and I can't find any siblings for him .

Hi,

The 1841 census gives a Thos Neal, aged 40, and the 1851 census says he's now 56 (but born in Elford, Staffordshire)! His wife, Maria, had died in 1840 so I'm not sure why Thomas would give a wrong age in the census!

I still can't find siblings even using 1794/1795, which, in those days, is very unusual.

Any ideas on finding his parents?

Thanks for your help,

Hi going on the 1851 age he could be:-

Thomas NEIL 8th July 1794 St Peter, Elford Father John Mother Eliz

Keyboard86

;D Which compares favourably with the Family Search one!

Remember that ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 years in the 1841 census

Well I never knew about the rounding down and I suspect I'm not the only one ignorant of that. It throws a different light on my searches.

Thanks every one for your help.
