We've got an Ancestry subscription so I'm going to start going through their Marriage records next.

Also it may be easier to track forward from your grandparents.

Thanks Liz.

Definitely worth a go in that case! I'll narrow it down as much as possible and then start looking at the list.

Thanks folks. I will keep you posted!

You could make and publish a small family tree for ancestry and GenesReunited for the names you have and see if anyone makes contact. Obviously search on those sites first to see if any trees are already on with the names you have.

You can register yourself on the GRO Adoption Contact register where you might find a member of your birth family is looking for contact with you.

Subscription sites such as Ancestry have marriages up to 2005. Some libraries have access to this site.

There are several libraries around the UK that have the BMD index up to the end of 2014 so worth looking where they are in relation to where you live. If none are near you could ask someone to do a look up for you.

Also it may be easier to track forward from your grandparents.

Check the birth index on ancestry for grandfather's surname with grandmother's in the mother's maiden name box for 5 years either side of your mother's birth and you will find any siblings she has. They may be easier to find especially if any are male as they will not have changed their surname.

Thanks very much Margaret.

We're planning a trip to the town of her birth to see what we can find out. Unfortunately, I know from the register that nobody is looking for me. As it's a bit sensitive we've decided to keep my Ancestry tree private for the moment.

We've also ordered my maternal Grandmother's birth certificate so we'll see where that takes us too.

All very frustrating at the moment, but I'll keep digging!

Thanks again.

You could do a tree just for the names you have and not include yourself - just a bit of 'bait' really.

Ah! Of course. I've seen some shared trees where some names are "private".

Ah! Of course. I've seen some shared trees where some names are "private".

In any event unless you tick for the tree not to be indexed any names in a private tree are included in search results but people can't see anything else unless they contact you.

Even then it would only be people who are deceased that are shown by name, everyone who is not noted on a tree as deceased and could possibly still be alive is shown as 'private'.
