Further update. As the death certificate didn't provide any details for my birth mother, I contacted Bury Archives through the online system.  They have come back to me with the index references for 3 possible matches for marriages.   I'm now working on narrowing these down as the Archives offered to do a parish records search for me which is a great help!

That's good and very helpful. Fingers crossed that you find the right one!
Make sure you quote the father's name for Susan as that is the determinant.

Had a further reply from Bury Archives which wasn't as promising as hoped. Turns out they need to know the church where the marriage took place in order to be able to help - The marriage records for the 1970s are still held by the churches....

You should be able to get the Register Office to help as the marriages have to be copied to GRO every 3 months for reporting nationally. The churches usually send in exact copies of the registers.

What you need to do is ask the Register Office if they would confirm which of those particular marriages you have identified have a father's name for the bride as John Leach - that is the identifying fact you are looking for to make sure it is the right marriage - crossing your fingers that no one else has the same father's name!

Also try seeing if you can find the marriages you are interested here http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/marriages.php which may give you the church.

Contact Bury Register Office here http://www.bury.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=5670&contactusID=453&ArticleReferenceId=2096

Thanks Margaret, didn't think of approaching the register office. Will give it a go..

Unfortunately, so far it seems that all the possible marriages that I have tried have not been transcribed to Lancashirebmd....

Well they are quite recent dates and really Lancs BMD is about ancestors so registers for older times are of more interest to most of the people who use the site and therefore given priority.

Good luck with the Register Office - I have found those I have approached to be very helpful in checking if an entry is held matching the details you provide before you order the cert - they won't tell you all the information without you paying.
