Woohoo! -  look Mack!!

James William Howarth enlisted in 4 KLR as No 49428 on 4/1/15 and subsequently also served with 17 KLR and 2/7 KLR before being discharged from the Army on 4/4/19 aged 36. He would have received the BW and Victory medals together with Silver War Badge No 495734.

Hi Annie,

Do you live in Liverpool, if so get in touch with Gary Smith at Museum of Liverpool Life. They have files on the Liverpool Reg. If you ring them I am sure they will help, they have special days that you can talk to experts on Liverpool regiments. My cousin and I went to one last April. it was great found out all kinds about our Grandfather, even the day he enlisted. They also have the war dairies there, you may even find him in those.

Hi,
The Liverpool Pals cap badge was the crest of the Earls of Derby with the motto Sans Chancer.

Liverpool jewellers Elkington and Company were commissioned to make silver versions of the new badge, which were handed to each individual recruit by Lord Derby in a private ceremony at the end of 1914. However these silver badges were not designed to be worn by the soldiers, but rather to be kept as mementos, and so brass versions were also given to be worn with the soldiers’ uniforms.

One has to remember that after the awful casualties the Pals battalions suffered often leading to whole streets loosing all their men they were disbanded. The Liverpool Pals were posted to the Kings Regiment.

The Eagle and Child badges of the Pals were not popular with other battalions in the Regiment. This was perhaps due to competition between battalions, or perhaps simply jealousy. One recruit remembers how a sergeant, on noticing his badge, screamed: "What’s that bloody bird doing in your hat? You’re in the King’s, so get an ‘orse up there where it should be!"

So it is entirely possible that a member of the Kings started out as a soldier the Liverpool Pals.

Cheers,
Wes
