Census records - looking for the Milnes-Smith family in the censuses

I am looking for the Milnes-Smith family in the censuses but cannot find them! They lived in Scarborough in 1910, where Marjorie Kathleen was born and her brother was born in Laleham Middx. in 1912. Their ancestor Thomas added the 'Milnes' to his name by Royal decree in 1820. I did find a 4 year old J F Milnes-Smith in Yorkshire in the 1911 and will probably try and get a copy of that record at some point. Double barren names are not easy to find! I have tried wild cards and combinations search to no avail. Suggestions welcome and if anyone is visiting the East Riding RO if they could have a quick look in the Parish Registers index, that would be great.

Which particular census are you after or all of them?

Who were the parents of Marjorie and her brother so we have some names/ages to look for

Hi thanks for the speedy reply. Her brother was john Preston and I don't know who her parents were. I am waiting for the birth certificate of her brother should arrive next week. Am after all censuses, I think that the name may have  been recorded either as 'Smith' or 'Milnes' or mispelt.

John Preston are those his two first names?  What name did you order the birth certificate under because I can't find the birth registration for him - which will give mothers maiden name - or for Marjorie.  Not doing very well so far

yes, John Preston were his first names. Got a blank too, very odd.. I may go for the copy of the 1911 census for j f Milnes-Smith the 4 year old who appears on his own, so presumably the household he was in were named something else. It is available on Findmypast but my free subscription has expired and i already subscribe on Ancestry who don't have it strangely enough, but FamilySearch have it. i know that the parents died young and that the children were brought up by an aunt.

Ok am getting somewhere now - there's a birth for John P Smith mothers maiden name Dunster and a marriage in 1910 John Milnes Smith and Dorothy Dunster.

So that couple should be together in 1911 under Smith probably. 

The marriage by the way was in Fulham not Scarborough.

I'm just looking on the Free BMD index.  Putting in births for John P 1912 and looking in the right district for where you said he was born - Laleham which is in Staines registration district.

Births after 1911 give you a mothers maiden name - very handy! 

There are two John P Smith births in Staines but as mothers name Dunster matches a marriage to John Milnes Smith I think that is the right one.

Then search for a marriage between Smith and Dunster and you will find the one in 1910.
