JM would have more knowledge than me, but from memory I think that the Broken Hill district is notorious for missing registration records, but I don't know if they were as lax with the church records.

Debra  :)

Yes, there's flaws in the NSW BDM records for Broken Hill district.   I will check and confirm some of the possible "gaps".    From memory, it has also been a tad difficult to locate some of the church registers,  I think the Salvation Army ones pre WWI have been among the more difficult to locate.    Some of the issues can be explained as : transient population, various accents, lack of pre-printed forms pre WWI (most registrations were based on verbal information from an informant), varying literacy levels, 'frontier' attitudes, tyranny of distance from Capital city, lack of regulations to monitor quarterly returns to NSW BDM, lack of understanding of the relative importance of collecting statistical information, lack of respect for authorities appointed by 'city folks' .....   And some confusion within Broken Hill as to where to expect 'government regulations' to come from ..... Sydney NSW or from the closest capital city .... Adelaide, SA.... or to use that 'confusion' as an excuse .....

Cheers,  JM

Perhaps Cheran will login again soon to let us know what she thinks of our findings.

It looks like William (snr), (born in 1831) followed the gold stream to Bendigo where most of his children were born and then back to SA
So sad about his wife (Ellen/Helen AUSTIN). And her children were quite young too.

There was also this birth in VIC
Birth of Ellen HOBBY jnr

Surname HORBY (sic)  Ellen
Father William
Mother Ellen AUSTIN
Birth Place BRIG
Year 1854
Reg  3037

Another Ellen HOBBY to add to the mix!

Ellen is listed on the newspaper shipping arrival from Melbourne which I have linked above and also on the departure link from Cando.

Ellen HOBBY married BURR.  This is a death notice placed by Fanny WASHINGTON (nee HOBBY) for her sister Ellen BURR in 1936
