lookup of birth William Hobby Bendigo Victoria
« on: Thursday 30 July 15 00:32 BST (UK) »
Is it possible to find a birth in Bendigo, Victoria for

HOBBY, William in about 1856....

William married Emma Ellen Satchell (daughter of Thomas James Satchell and granddaughter of Edward Davis Satchell) 3 October 1883 in Gawler South Australia

I have found William's Obituary and

and it records that his birth was in Bendigo Victoria and that he was 81 when he died in 1937...

It also has that he was survived by 2 daughters  Mrs Giles and Mrs Rees...
but I have another daughter who I believe  who died in 2008 in the Barossa "Nellie" who was 98...

I am looking to confirm

Williams birth and his parents?
Nellie's birth as well as a brother's birth - Henry

I have births of the other siblings

i.e. Elizabeth Clara, William Thomas, Sydney Charles....

Cheers

Emma's death notice also says there were only two sons and two daughters.  From the marriage index, the daughters were Elizabeth Clara and Elsie May (GILES and REES).

Thanks for trying....  I will leave Nellie and henry there for a little while longer but perhaps they not Emma and William's children...

I found an Ellen born 1893 in Broken Hill to William Hobby and Emma E. Ellen died 1893 F: William Mother: Emma E.

also a Henry born 1895 in Broken Hill to William Hobby and Emma E.    Wonder if they are connected???

As William's obit says that he went to live in Broken Hill and did't return to SA until 1896 then yes, it is likely that they had children there.  My guess is that they were infant deaths.  Henry's birth cert would confirm the parents' identity and also list the previous children who were both living and deceased.

JM would have more knowledge than me, but from memory I think that the Broken Hill district is notorious for missing registration records, but I don't know if they were as lax with the church records.

Hi Cheran

A William HOBBY and Ellen AUSTIN were in VIC from 1858 at Iron Bark Gully and Sandhurst,
then at Wallaroo Bay SA in 1865.

There was a death at Kapunda 20 Mar 1871 for Helen aged 44, wife of William HOBBY.
Could well be the parents of your William?

I agree, Rhonda. There is a strong likliehood that this couple are the parents of William.
There is some supporting  evidence but nothing absolutely definite.

Possibly the arrival from Melbourne of the HOBBY family 1864.  Names mentioned agree with some births to William and Ellen (nee AUSTIN) in Victoria

Suicide attempt of Mrs HOBBY February 1871. Mentions daughters and that her husband -not named- works at Adamson’s Yards

Mrs HOBBY died of the injuries she inflicted on 24th march 1871

Faith Jones has  photo of one Ellen HOBBY's headstone at Christ Church Kapunda .  Hope she is the right one.

This item in 1872 item is about a theft by William HOBBY Junior at Kapunda of brass pieces from J B Adamson, machinist business. He confessed.

There are marriage and some death notices for Fanny, Ellen and Albert/Alfred in the papers, which can be linked if of interest.

We will wait to hear form out OP.

Others with more SA resources may help further to confirm Will HOBBY's parents as Ellen AUSTIN and William HOBBY.

William senior was a miner at Bendigo in 1860 when he gave evidence at an inquest at Iron Bark Gully.
